We Must Speak Out Against Xenophobia and Racist Attacks

March 19, 2020

Dear Partners –
Thank you for your steadfast commitment to supporting and advocating for consumers during these difficult, unsettling and constantly changing times. We definitely all are being impacted by COVID-19 in numerous ways. Today, however, I am specifically reaching out to you to address how Asian Americans and people of Asian heritage are being discriminated against.
The deliberate use of racist terms and language that promote stigma, fear and discrimination against people of Asian heritage is appalling. Community Catalyst condemns racist and xenophobic attacks on Asian American communities and people from Asian nations residing in our country. The best way to combat these acts is to actively stand up and speak out against them.
We are thankful to partners in the health justice movement who have been creating resources to guide our work and ensure that we are not perpetuating demeaning narratives. Protecting Immigrant Families has created guidance to defuse false and negative associations between COVID-19 and immigrant communities or populations. Additionally we have relied on resources such as this from the Opportunity Agenda that provide lessons for talking about race, racism and racial justice.
We stand with our partners of Asian heritage who are feeling the impacts of these attacks deeply. We will never stop fighting for the health of everyone, and we call on everyone, including all elected officials and business, faith and community leaders, to stand against these racist attacks.
In solidarity,

Emily Stewart
Executive Director
