(BOSTON, MA) – Today, news broke that President Biden has nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court that will be created by the retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer. Judge Jackson currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and has presided over numerous high visibility decisions. Previously, Judge Jackson clerked for Justice Breyer in 1999, has served as a public defender, an assistant federal prosecutor and also sat on the U.S. Sentencing Commission. If confirmed by the Senate, Judge Jackson would be the first black woman to occupy a seat on the Supreme Court bench.
Statement of Community Catalyst Executive Director Emily Stewart in response to the historic nomination by President Biden of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court:
“Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is one of the brightest legal minds in the country and would clearly make an exceptional Supreme Court Justice. Judge Jackson’s long legal record on civil rights will be particularly important as the Court considers race equity and health justice issues that have a profound impact on people’s ability to be healthy and thrive. Further, the nomination of a Black woman to the nation’s highest court is long overdue, as there can be no question that lived experience plays a role in guiding the Supreme Court as it makes decisions that impact the entire nation in different ways. We urge the Senate to act quickly on this nomination and confirm Judge Jackson to the court.”
