(Boston, MA) —Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the California v Texas decision, upholding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which has made health care more affordable and accessible for tens of millions of people. The ruling is an especially positive outcome for Black and brown people, women, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and people with low-incomes, who have made historic gains in coverage thanks to the ACA. Over the past decade, the ACA has been a lifeline for millions, from those who gained coverage when their state expanded Medicaid to those who needed health coverage due to the COVID-19 pandemic to people with pre-existing conditions like cancer, heart disease and diabetes who can no longer be denied or charged more for health coverage.

Statement of Emily Stewart, executive director of Community Catalyst, regarding today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision on California v. Texas:

Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a massive victory and great relief for tens of millions of people across America who have had to live with the worry they might lose their health coverage. This is a particularly positive outcome for Black and brown people, who are more likely to have pre-existing health conditions and rely on the ACA’s Medicaid and Marketplace coverage due to unfair and discriminatory barriers to economic security and employer-sponsored coverage. The ACA is more popular with the public than ever, and it is time to put to rest the decade-long fight against access to health coverage. Congress must  build on today’s ruling by turning to the future, starting with passing laws to keep premiums low, reduce high out-of-pocket costs and close the Medicaid coverage gap in all 50 states, making health coverage more affordable and equitable.”
