John G. O'Brien

John G. O’Brien became the Jane and William Mosakowski Distinguished Professor of Higher Education at Clark University’s Mosakowski Institute in in August, 2013. He is the immediate past President and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care, central Massachusetts’ largest not-for-profit health care delivery system with 1,700 physicians and over 13,000 employees and the clinical partner of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He formerly served as CEO of the Cambridge Health Alliance and Commissioner of Health for the City of Cambridge. During his tenure as in Cambridge he led a team of people that transformed a once ailing small city hospital into a premier academic public health care system.

O’Brien is a national leader in advocating for the health of vulnerable populations and is the recipient of numerous awards for his work. He is a past member of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees, and past chair of both the Board of the National Association of Public Hospitals and the Board of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. He plays a leadership role in helping to strengthen and catalyze the Mosakowski Institute’s work on issues of health and well-being. O’Brien holds an A.B. in Economics from Harvard and an MBA in Health Care Administration from Boston University.
